Positioning IT for the Inevitable Avalanche of Digital Change
In the world of technology, we love words like “disruptor” and “transformation.” They’re often tossed around with awe, as if we’re witnessing something miraculous. And yes, I’ve lived through some true marvels — the evolution of the microchip, leveraging GPS, and the public adoption of the World Wide Web (yes, I’m old enough to call it that). But when I hear people rave about Amazon revolutionizing retail or Uber “disrupting” transportation, I nod — creative, sure. But let’s not confuse clever business models with moon landings.
The real marvels? They lie ahead. And they start with a choice.
As someone often asked by fellow C-suite leaders, “How do I get more out of my IT investment?” or “How do we start leveraging AI, automation, and robotics?” — my answer is always the same:
To achieve tomorrow, today, you must commit.
That means more than buzzwords. It means allocating time, money, resources, and resolve to a specific goal. You can’t innovate by accident. You have to want it, drive it, and fund it.
At its core, business is about bringing order to chaos, giving customers predictable outcomes. Technology’s job is to help us do that faster, more accurately, and with more foresight.
Let me give you an unusual metaphor: gambling.
Predicting the outcome of a game — picking a winner, covering a spread — requires:
• Relevant, timely, accurate data
• An understanding of influencing factors (injuries, weather, momentum, etc.)
• A defined goal (the outcome you want)
• And a predictive model to analyze it all
This is exactly how business and IT should function.
We’re not building IT departments to simply keep the Wi-Fi running. We’re building systems to help us predict and influence outcomes. That’s the real value of modern technology: using information to outthink uncertainty. That’s why it’s called Information Technology.
And the next wave? It’s already rolling in.
IoT gathers data. Automation improves timeliness. AI and machine learning analyze the data. Robotics act on it. Predictive analytics will become the linchpin of every industry.
We’re now entering an era where machines not only support decisions, they make them. Just look at XPENG’s new humanoid robot, Iron. With 60 joints and 200 degrees of freedom, it walks, lifts, and even converses like a human. Powered by XPENG’s proprietary AI chip capable of 3,000 trillion operations per second, it doesn’t just follow commands — it learns, adapts, and predicts.
From assembling cars to potentially diagnosing patients, robots like Iron are not replacing people. They’re augmenting us. Enhancing our reach. Removing our limits.
We humans? We all have an expiration date. We get tired. We process information slowly. We’re version 1.0 of intelligence. The next version? It operates 24/7. It consumes and analyzes extremely large volumes of data. And it’s already here.
So, ask yourself — if IT’s true purpose is to help us do better, be faster, and predict outcomes — why are we still only leveraging it for administrative tasks?
Leaders of tomorrow are already committing today. They’re not waiting for disruption — they’re driving it. They’re not imagining “what if?”, they’re building “what’s next.”
So, here’s my question for you:
What will you do today to commit your cause to tomorrow’s future?
