Think Different: Your Future Awaits You

Before I dive into my usual rant, let me start with this:

There has never been a better time to be alive than right now!

Yeah, I said it.

I tip my cap to Alvin Toffler, the futurist who saw this coming decades ago. His books — Future Shock, The Third Wave, Powershift — weren’t just predictions. They were roadmaps for navigating massive change. He framed our history through “waves” of economic transformation:

• First Wave: The Agricultural Age – You consumed what you produced. The home was your school, your church, your foundation.
• Second Wave: The Industrial Age – Resources were centralized. Hierarchies were built. Everything was about scale. Big was better.
• Third Wave: The Information Age – We entered a decentralized, connected world. Knowledge became the currency. And suddenly, big wasn’t always better.

Now, here we are — straddling two worlds: the Industrial past and the Digital future. And we’re feeling the tension every day.

Let me make it personal.

When my grandfather’s farm was sold in the 1940s, he picked up a welding torch, moved to the city, and got to work in the steel industry. Like so many from his era, the playbook was simple: value family, get an education, and most importantly, get a job.

That mindset made sense then. But today? It’s broken.

We’re still telling kids to follow that same path — “go to school, get a degree, get a job” — as if the world hasn’t changed. But the model has shifted.

Let’s unpack the Industrial Age playbook:

• Centralized resources: Control over materials, labor, power.
• De-skilled labor: Repeatable tasks to reduce business risk.
• Synchronization: People and machines in rigid lockstep.
• Hierarchy: Decisions at the top. Execution at the bottom.
• Social norms: Defined by contributing to the machine.

Sound familiar?

That’s the model that gave us Gross National Product, mega-corporations, and a culture that worshipped scale. It made sense for its time. But that time is gone.

Today, we’re in a world of Digital Transformation, where automation, AI, and access to global knowledge are upending every norm. The companies that can’t pivot are folding. The employees stuck in legacy mindsets are frustrated and disengaged. And the kids? They’re asking, “What now?”

Here’s what: THINK DIFFERENT.

We can’t keep shoving digital tools into outdated industrial structures and expecting magic.

Instead, it’s time to rewire how we think:

• Connectors win. People who link others to ideas, services, products, and knowledge are the new power players.
• Old model: Trains, telephones, universities.
• New model: Amazon, Google, Facebook, Apple. They don’t make the content. They connect it.
• Commodities are everywhere. If you can think of it, someone has already built it, automated it, or is renting it.
• Ownership is out. Access is in. The smart move isn’t buying the infrastructure — it’s plugging into it.

Look around:

• Personal life: VHS tapes → DVDs → Streaming on demand.
• Business: On-premise IT → Cloud services + AI + real-time data intelligence.
• Workforce: Large labor forces → automation and robotics doing the heavy lifting.

Sound scary? It doesn’t have to be.

Think back to the early days of the internet. The web didn’t instantly reshape the world. It took time, but once the connectors emerged, everything changed. We became a global workforce. Entire industries were born.

And the same thing is happening again — right now.

The future belongs to creators, connectors, and those bold enough to build new systems instead of duct-taping digital solutions onto outdated hierarchies. It belongs to those who lead the shift toward decentralized, data-driven, service-on-demand models.
